Council conducted a survey earlier this year to gauge thoughts from stakeholders and the broader community regarding preferences for streetscape improvements within the Yeppoon town centre. A plan has now been developed to facilitate the first stage of improvements in the first block of Normanby between Anzac Parade and Hill Street. Improvements will be undertaken on both sides of Normanby Street and within the median. This and future stages are intended to support a stronger local identity, more robust and resilient local economy and increased visitor attraction as part of our Placemaking Program. Delivery of this first stage is expected

Delivery of this first stage is expected to start after the Christmas school holidays with future stages delivered subject to funding.

Improvements will be primarily focused on landscaping, more specifically on the installation of signature shade and street trees to create an environment more in keeping with the region’s sub-tropical identity, with the goal of providing substantially more shade to encourage increased pedestrian activity (more people, staying longer, spending more, instagramming friends etc).

In due course, landscaping will be supplemented with contemporary street furniture, pedestrian level lighting (akin to what has been installed recently), wayfinding signage and the other necessary components of a quality pedestrian environment.

There are two attached concept documents that you can provide comment on, being the proposed planting plan and a demolition plan (removal of pavement to accommodate planting). The corner adjacent to The Strand is being redesigned separately to align with the attached concept.

Shop Owners

You are the primary stakeholders driving activity in the street, you have the most knowledge of how your customers interact with the precinct. We need your advice, support and cooperation to deliver the best possible outcomes. As such, we are asking for your views on preferred outcomes and priorities for improvements to the public realm in order to inform the design of such enhancements.

How can you get involved?

In order to finalise the design and begin the tender process (prior to an anticipated February 2021 construction date), we seek your input prior to Tuesday 17 November 2020. Council Officers will be happy to meet with any interested parties if required.
