The small animal industry, including small cattle herd processing, is an underdeveloped part of the Central Queensland rural focus. The Livingstone Shire Council (LSC) in partnership with Rockhampton Regional Council (RRC), through Advance Rockhampton, are exploring opportunities to grow this rural sector in Central Queensland.

The partnership is considering conducting a pre-feasibility study for the attraction of a multi-species processing facility to be established in region. To inform this study we need to collect confidential current data regarding the position of the small animal and small cattle herd numbers, and producers in both the Livingstone Shire LGA (Local Government Area), Rockhampton Regional LGA and broader regions.

As the region has many small landholders, it is hoped that a sustainable, ethical and consistent supply chain of product can be developed to enhance increasing domestic market demand. Collaboration between producers, may allow opportunity for processors, butchers, retailers, restaurateurs, food vendors and agritourism businesses to diversify and grow Central Queensland’s agricultural profile and economy.
