The Yeppoon Town Centre Revitalisation Project will be a comprehensive urban renewal initiative aimed at using streetscaping to transform the CBD into a vibrant, sustainable, and connected community hub.
This project will predominantly focus on landscaping improvements such as planting trees to create an urban green canopy as well as seating, signage and public art. The project will revitalise the area by incorporating urban cooling and green infrastructure, enhancing pedestrian connectivity, and promoting economic growth.
It's been over 100 years since Yeppoon's main street has had any significant tree planting, and while some improvements have been made, the area still lacks adequate shade, lighting, and a consistent theme. It's time for a revitalisation to enhance the town's appeal and amenities, and to position Yeppoon as a desirable destination for tourists, investors, and residents.
Proposed project scope
This project will be undertaken in a staged approach, with Stage 1 starting at the eastern most block of Normanby Street.
The proposed improvements will include:
- Enhanced pedestrian pathways and crossings, ensuring greater accessibility
- Installation of public art
- Creation of vibrant public spaces with landscaping, gardens, and street furniture
- Creation of and improvements to outdoor dining areas
- Implementation of sustainable design principles and energy-efficient technologies.
The scope will not include replacing all the pavers/hardscape.
History of our CBD
In 1920, James Street was first planted with Hoop Pines to memorialise 68 local volunteers that enlisted to fight in WW1. Some of these trees were relocated and additional trees were planted in the early 1930s. The limited number of coconut palms were added at a later date, also to commemorate enlistees. Only two of the original Hoop Pines now remain.
Given that 100 years have now passed since the first planting, it’s appropriate that this visionary early civic initiative is honoured through replacement of what has been lost with an even grander streetscape.
