The Great Keppel Island (Woppa) Arrivals Plaza and Amenities project is a catalyst project identified in the Great Keppel Island (Woppa) Concept Master Plan to provide a vibrant, culturally-informative gathering place for visitors to the island.

Council, in partnership with the Queensland Government, has commenced a detailed concept design process for the Great Keppel Island (Woppa) Arrivals Plaza and Amenities project.

The concept proposes a new amenities building accommodating toilets, lockers and change facilities and a multipurpose tenancy space that could facilitate a variety of commercial uses. These facilities are supported by generous outdoor spaces that include shaded paved seating and bbq areas, lawn areas with integrated nature play, Woppaburra welcoming circle, beach showers and boardwalk access to Fisherman’s beach and the ferry services.

Arrivals Plaza and Amenities

The arrivals plaza will create a sense of excitement and encourage visitors to explore Great Keppel Island (Woppa). The arrivals plaza will be located adjacent to the Great Keppel Island Hideaway Resort and Great Keppel Island Holiday Village.

The intent for the Arrivals Plaza is to create a dedicated arrival experience for visitors to Great Keppel Island (Woppa) which promotes the unique cultural and natural character.

Inspired by the unique natural rock formations along the coastline which have been sculpted by nature and weathered over thousands of years, the design narrative of the arrival precinct takes direct cues from the geological forms to create a beachfront precinct that responds sympathetically to its coastal exposed location with a dynamic edge treatment and design language that shifts in and out as if weathered and eroded by the wind and waves over time.

The Arrivals Plaza aims to become a catalyst project for the broader future masterplanning objectives proposed for the island that aim to rejuvenate tourism and economic activity.

Welcoming Place

A large gathering area and 'Welcoming place' will empower Woppaburra rangers to introduce visitors to the island and educate them at the outset to their journey. Seating, shelter and BBQs will be located around the welcoming place to encourage visitors to connect with Country upon their arrival.
